Participatory Cities

Rescheduled to spring 2021. Please stay tuned.

Leaders of the world's largest creative community, Burning Man, and dozens of its international activists and key local influencers to join the event will gather at the Participatory Cities unconference in Helsinki on April 1, 2020.

Participatory Cities unconference in Helsinki brings together urban and cultural actors to co-create solutions for participatory, inclusive and expressive urban environments. The aim of the day is to better understand the challenges our cities are facing worldwide ranging from gentrification, rising rents, reduced social space to cities losing their uniqueness and creative talent, and find out if are there ways we can tackle these problems?

At the event, hierarchies are left in the cloakroom and silos in the flower pot. We invite business leaders, city activists, city planners, mavens of change, artists, scientists and media representatives to share experiences and insights, to envision the new and to find new possibilities for collaboration.

Burning Man

Quoted from

Burning Man Project’s mission is to produce the annual event known as Burning Man and to guide, nurture and protect the more permanent community created by its culture. Our intention is to generate society that connects each individual to his or her creative powers, to participation in community, to the larger realm of civic life, and to the even greater world of nature that exists beyond society.

We believe that the experience of Burning Man can produce positive spiritual change in the world. To this end, it is equally important that we communicate with one another, with the citizens of Black Rock City and with the community of Burning Man wherever it may arise. Burning Man is radically inclusive, and its meaning is potentially accessible to anyone. The touchstone of value in our culture will always be immediacy: experience before theory, moral relationships before politics, survival before services, roles before jobs, embodied support before sponsorship. Finally, in order to accomplish these ends, Burning Man must endure as a self-supporting enterprise that is capable of sustaining the lives of those who dedicate themselves to its work. From this devotion spring those duties that we owe to one another.

Burning Man is a network of people inspired by the values reflected in the Ten Principles and united in the pursuit of a more creative and connected existence in the world. Throughout the year we work to build Black Rock City, home of the largest annual Burning Man gathering, and nurture the distinctive culture emerging from that experience. The hub of this global network is the 501(c)(3) non-profit Burning Man Project, headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Burning Man Project will bring experiences to people in grand, awe-inspiring and joyful ways that lift the human spirit, address social problems, and inspire a sense of culture, community, and civic engagement.

European Leadership Summit

The seventh annual Burning Man European Leadership Summit (ELS) will take place in beautiful Tallinn, Estonia from 2-5 April 2020. A Pre-Summit gathering will be hosted in Helsinki, Finland from 30 March – 2 April 2020. The main event in Tallinn will bring together a total of 250 participants from over 30 countries comprised of Regional Contacts, Burning Man Project staff, and a strong network of co-creators from across Europe and adjacent regions including Israel and South Africa.

The ELS will also draw participation from local universities, arts and cultural organizations and artistic communities in Tallinn, Estonia and Helsinki, Finland, including Helsinki-based Aalto University, where the Pre-Summit gathering will take place. ELS participants will have a unique opportunity to explore the unique cultural landscapes of these two cities nestled alongside the Baltic Sea.

The goal of the ELS is to foster an inspiring atmosphere of co-learning amongst a diverse international group of cultural leaders. Participants will share their experiences, hard-won expertise, successes and challenges with one another, drawn from their year-round efforts to fostering local community events and initiatives inspired by Burning Man’s 10 Principles.

Keynote speakers to inspire discussion and creativity.
